Photo of the Week 7

Photo of the Week 7
This week's featured Photo of the Week is this powerful sunset shot.  This particular picture was taken on the road between Firth and Blackfoot, Idaho.  This road is also known as Yellowstone Highway as it eventually connects into Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.  This stretch of the highway passes through some rich farming country as evidenced by the hand line sprinklers.

This was an unpleasant day as it was hot and muggy.  June is an unpredictable month for weather here in Southeastern Idaho.  The storm was building up and it was getting dangerous since thunder and lightning were beginning to start.  The wind was also beginning to whip up.  The rest of the drive included passing through the summer rain storm.

Going out into a thunderstorm or being outside when there is lightning present is a very dangerous thing to do especially if there is not much in the way of taller objects around.  Please do not risk your life for a photograph no matter how once-in-a-lifetime you may think it is.

A shot like this is very much about being in the right place at the right time with the right equipment.  I just happened to have my camera with me in the car in addition to my tripod for stabilization.  One cannot always predict when the clouds will look like this and time perfectly with the sunset.  Landscape photographs like this are more about luck overall but skill on the scene can be the difference between an amazing gallery-quality photograph or a simple tourist snapshot.
