Local LDS Temples Photo Tour

Local LDS Temples Photo Tour
The skies were dark with the setting sun already behind the mountains and the gathering storm clouds when I set up my camera to take a picture: a picture to define my work as a photographer.   I desperately hoped that it would not start raining or snowing on me or the light fail me completely and end my photo session early.  Even if the weather was bound to be disagreeable, I was prepared to take the shot anyways.  Fine art photography requires sacrifice.

Every so often, as a photographer, I want to do something a little bit different than landscape and nature photography.  I seek out some different subject matter with my camera.  I still look for something amazing to shoot since that is my job.  Such has been my mood lately.

Occasionally, architecture catches my eye and yields something I like and find portfolio-worthy.  Local subject matter are some of the best subjects in my humble opinion.  Some of the most beautiful buildings to photograph around Southeastern Idaho are the LDS temples.

There are several temples within a reasonable driving distance of Pocatello.  These include the Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Twin Falls, Logan, Ogden, Brigham City, Bountiful, and Salt Lake City temples.

Some recent client work has allowed me to go to the grounds of a couple of those temples.  With my camera in hand and some amazing weather and lighting conditions available, I was pleased to capture some lovely pictures of a couple local temples.

The pioneer era Salt Lake temple is so iconic and highly photographed that it is difficult to get a photograph or an angle which has not been done a thousand times before.  However, it is still an amazing building and makes for a beautiful photo especially when paired with the reflecting pool on the east side.

The water there is in constant motion but the surface is so still that a clear reflection is easily achieved.

The parallax of the converging vertical lines draws heavenward.  The highly iconic Angel Moroni crowns the top of this temple in all its glory lighted from the rooftops below.  The twilight, rather than perfect darkness of night, frames the base of the temple and the tree line adding a special touch of growing storm and the shelter offered in the light.

The second temple we managed to photograph in an epic fashion was the Idaho Falls temple.

Situated just across the Snake River from a scenic but popular photographic vista is Idaho's first LDS temple.  It is commonly seen with the short but very wide waterfall of the nearby river in front.  I decided that I wanted to try for a different shot that day.

I noticed what promised to be a jaw-dropping sunset behind the temple if I could only get my equipment set up in time.  Alas, that was not to be, but this photo also shows a gathering storm in the skies above.

The symmetry of the scene really drew my attention in.  The moving clouds added just the right touch of drama to this beautiful and chilling photograph.  The Angel Moroni is standing sentinel against the growing darkness coming.

We were pleased to capture these amazing scenes and to be able to share them with our readers.  As we gain the opportunity to do so, we plan on adding other LDS temples to the collection.
