Photo of the Week 29
Family portraits in pristine settings are all the rage in portrait photography right now.  There is something simply timeless about beautiful locations and beautiful people together in the same photograph.  When done well, these kinds of photos can even be magical.

This amazing family wanted to have a backdrop of water in their family portrait.  There are few places around Southeastern Idaho where I could add this kind of natural feel to their portrait.  This region of Idaho is not known for its lakes and ponds.  Most of the larger pools of water are man-made.

This was a bright and early morning with this family.  The sun was amazing for the landscape side of things but not so nice for the proper lighting of the family.  There were harsh and directional shadows which were not flattering at all.  This was solved by "the sail" or my very large reflector panel, so named for its tendency to catch the wind when being used.

I really liked this early time as the wind had not yet kicked up to ruffle the water behind the family.  It was still pristine and reflective.  What is really interesting is that a couple of minutes after completing this pose, the wind started blowing and the reflection of the trees was lost.  I completed this shot just in time.

Amazing settings can be found anywhere.  I still find it hard to believe that there is a freeway a little ways off to the left of this shot.  Amazing, fun, and easy-to-work-with people are a little less common but still easily found.  When these two elements combine together with the right photographer, the results of the camera can be pure magic.
