The Fair Came to Town

The Fair Came to Town
It's that time of year.  It's time for the FAIR!!!  The Eastern Idaho State Fair was last week.  We couldn't miss out on that chance for fine art photography nor the chance to have some fun and shop.  Here is some about our trip up to Blackfoot.

The fair is a draw for all kinds.  Merchants from the local region drop in to attract new clients.  Farmers and ranchers bring in their crops and animals for judging.  Arts and crafts also make an appearance.  Blue, red, and white ribbons abound along with honorable mentions.

We had hoped to enter the fair as contestants in the photography contest but it didn't work out this year.  Still, there was no reason to lose out on the opportunity for some photography.

We toured the animal pens in hopes of perhaps getting a unique farm animal photo.  Due to the nature of the pens, and what they contain, we decided that there would not be very many good photo opportunities there.  Our next stop was merchant row.

The merchants were a bit scant this year.  It must be due to the economy.  We tried a few ideas there but nothing ended up working for us.  The food court is just plain not worth the effort in a crowd.  So, we headed to the area of the fair where we knew there would be results: the carnival.

Ah, the carnival.  The only place in the fair worth spending any time if you are a child.  The lights, the rides, the games, the prizes.  There is nothing so cool or exciting.  Even adults still appreciate the glamour of the fair carnival.  We took the time for some rides ourselves.

Our chief focus for the evening was the giant Ferris wheel.  It is the undisputed king of the carnival and the carnival skies.  I had to take a photo of that.  Getting the right angle and trying for the right shot was interesting.  We did a sunset and a night shoot just to get it right.

With the night shot, we had so much trouble getting a clear shot of the Ferris wheel without people walking in front.  Also people crowding in front or taking selfies with the wheel were common problems.  At last, we had a window of a few seconds where people stayed out of the shot and we captured a long exposure of the Ferris wheel.

Even though we were disappointed about being contestants, we were thoroughly delighted about the amazing fine art photos which we managed to capture.  We love the fair and we can't wait for next year.
