Photo of the Week 82

Photo of the Week 82
Guess what?  You know.  It's Friday again.  That means it's time for the unveiling.  It's time to reveal Cramer Imaging's choice for "Photo of the Week."  Our choice this week is particularly suited to this month.  It's a picture of a yellow tulip against a snowy backdrop.

The story behind this photo is one of timing.  Thanks to early Idaho spring weather, we often get snow during much of the season.  We have even been known to get snow in the summer.  A spring blizzard is not uncommon at all.

When one such snowfall hit in the middle of tulip season, I drug out my camera and braved the snow and cold for this shot.  The wind was particularly brutal and kept making the flower dance.  That might work for a video but not for the still shot of photography.

The wind was so bad that I had to jury-rig up a wind break in the hopes of making the flower stand still long enough for me to get the shot I was hoping for.  Finding boards which would work was a bit fun too.

With my partial wind break in place, I still had to time things perfectly.  Gusts were coming in frequently and would still disturb my photo set.

My next challenge was to get enough of the snow in the background of the shot for the juxtaposition I wanted but not include elements I didn't want such as the stump just out of sight.  It ended up requiring a low-to-the-ground position to get what I wanted.

When all was said and done, I immediately sought out the warmth of the house.  However, I managed to capture a drop of sunshine in the middle of snow that day.
