Photo of the Week 85

Photo of the Week 85
It's Friday, April first.  Instead of going with an April Fool's joke, we decided that you would much prefer looking at a beautiful flower photo instead.  After all, it's still time for our "Photo of the Week."  In honor of the beginning of spring, we chose a pink tulip to brighten your day.

This is one of those photographs where it really helped to walk out the front door that day.  The snow had melted off and absorbed into the ground and the air was warmer.  I spotted some of the tulips in bloom.  I just had to get me a fine art photo of at least one of them.  So, out came the camera and the jacket (it wasn't that warm yet).

When going for an outdoor nature shot, I usually have to worry about the sun and the kind of light it's casting on my subject matter.  Fortunately, that day was quite overcast so I did not have to deal with the deep shadows and the overblown highlights of mid-day sunlight.  That was a blessing I can tell you.

I had some trouble choosing just the right tulip flower for my subject.  There were many nice specimens that day but most of them did not have a good angle or a good background for me to use.  I had to do some fancy work with composition in order to have the background I wanted instead of some dead vegetation or some lifeless dirt behind the vibrant flower.

Once I had my composition, I still had those early spring winds to worry about.  They kept coming up and making the tulip dance out of focus.  It was a bit frustrating and patience-testing but I managed to catch a moment of calm and snap a shot in.
