Photo of the Week 91
You knew it was coming and now it's arrived.  Presenting Cramer Imaging's latest featured "Photo of the Week."  This week's selection was that of a single bleeding heart flower macro photograph.

When my mother-in-law requested that I take a photo of her absolute most favorite flower in the world, I couldn't say no.  That meant that I had to pull out my camera for none other than the bleeding heart bushes when they bloomed.

I didn't get the shots I was hoping to initially.  I turned up a few disappointing attempts.  That meant that I had to wait until the next spring when the flowers finally wilted away for the year.  It was disappointing to say the least.  I felt like I had let her down a bit.

My next attempts weren't as fruitless as the first.  With this shot, I wanted to try for a tight angle on a single flower.  Most of the time you see bleeding hearts as a bunch on a stem because that's the way that they grow.  I wanted to try something a bit different.

To start with, the angle on this shot was not easy to get.  I had to shoot through the bars of a stair rail.  It was an uncomfortable seating arrangement to be sure.  My tripod was too tall for where I was perched.  I had to hand hold my camera.  I also had to wait for the wind to not blow.  Any small gust and the image would blur.  Patience was key here.

I got in as close as I could with the macro lens I have.  It was relatively tight but not tight enough for me given its limits.  When I went into Photoshop for my processing, I cropped it in even tighter.  That allowed me to isolate the single flower from the rest.  A little sprucing up created a dynamic color range against the black background.

Sadly, the amount of cropping I had to made it impossibly small for regular sales.  That's the trade-off I had to make with this photo.
