Photo of the Week 92

Photo of the Week 92
Hooray for another Friday.  The weekend is almost here.  It'll be time to relax and forget about work for a couple of days.  Well, until that time arrives, we would like to take your mind off of things for a couple of minutes with our featured "Photo of the Week."  This week's photo features the bleeding heart flower bush.

This photo began as another attempt at shooting the bleeding hearts for my mother-in-law.  I decided to focus on a single string of the flowers and include some of the leaves along with.  It seemed like it might work out for me.

I waited for the light to be right so that all the colors would be vibrant and the deep shadows eliminated.  I wanted the highlights to be properly toned as well.  This meant waiting for closer to sundown so that the sun disappeared behind the neighbor's house and the flower bed was enveloped in shade.

I grabbed my camera, tripod, and cable release.  I knew that all of those tools would be necessary for this shot.  Once the camera was positioned on the tripod and aimed at the flowers, I started working.  I wanted to get a shot where you could see the leaves in addition to the flowers.  This required a deep depth of field and a narrow aperture in order to achieve.

Thanks to the small aperture, I knew that I would have a longer shutter speed and hand holding the camera was not an option unless I wanted motion blur.  With the cable release, I was able to eliminate my unwanted hand jiggle and make this shot possible with sharpness.  An extra long exposure time later and I had this shot nailed.
