Photo of the Week 100

Photo of the Week 100
So, this week marks our 100th straight "Photo of the Week."  We had to choose something extra special for this monumental milestone.  For this week, we chose a special landscape photo which is close to our hearts.  Presenting our 100th choice called "Moonrise Over the Tetons."

This beautiful photograph started out as an assignment to go and capture some cover art for a collaboration effort between two very gifted songwriters.  I was eager to accept the assignment and give it a try.

I had weather hampering me getting the shot that I wanted on my first trip out to the Teton mountains.  I knew that I couldn't get anything usable then so we scheduled another trip for a time when we hoped there would be less rain to deal with.  This is Idaho after all.

When we arrived at this location, a scenic overlook by Tetonia, I scouted for just the right angle I wanted to shoot and set up my tripod.  It was a few minutes before sunset so I amused myself with trying for other shots, using a different camera, in the mean time.

When sunset hit, I quickly started shooting pictures of the mountains before me.  I wanted to make sure that I walked away from this shoot with the photo for cover art.  I didn't want a third trip if I could avoid it.  It's a 2 hour drive one way.

When I felt secure that I had the cover art I wanted, I started working on a fine art scenic photo.  I still had plenty of light and plenty of space on the memory card.  What was the point of leaving with more opportunity right in front of me?

When I saw the moon coming over the horizon of the mountains, I scrambled to find a way to include it in my shot.  It required a wide angle lens to do so.  Even then, I wasn't sure about whether or not I would be dealing with vignetting issues.  I didn't want darkened photo corners on this shot.

After I got back home and got to processing, I did notice that I was dealing with some digital noise issues with this photo.  I felt devastated when I discovered the noise.  I thought I would have to throw away this beautiful photo once and for all.  My kind spouse encouraged me to try the noise reduction algorithms in Lightroom to see if it helped.  Thankfully, it did.
