Photo of the Week 117

Photo of the Week 117
It's that time once again.  Friday is here and the weekend has almost arrived and it's time once again to reveal Cramer Imaging's pick for featured "Photo of the Week."   In keeping with our tradition, we've chosen a beautiful photograph to tell you about this week.  It's a photograph of a glorious and beautiful sunset.

This sunset, though it has a rather plain and unexciting silhouette of the land below, was actually one of those moments where it really pays to look behind you.  Sometime there are great and beautiful subjects outside of the frame of where your camera is pointing.  I'm glad that I started looking behind me more or I would have missed this scene entirely.

We took a trip out in the wild again for a landscape photograph with the lunar eclipse scheduled to happen that night.  Being one of the first to arrive at my chosen location for the planned photograph, I had my pick of where to set up my tripod.  After that, it was a waiting game until the moon rose and eclipsed.

In order to pass the time, I started checking out my surroundings and watching other photographers who started showing up.  As most people were pointing towards the direction where the moon would rise, they weren't looking behind them at the beautiful sunset happening that evening.  I did and I decided that I wanted that shot too just in case the eclipse didn't work out for me.  It's a good thing too since the eclipse was blocked by clouds.

When I got back home and started processing, I noticed that this photo was passable but didn't really have that wow factor I wanted.  Having just learned about how to use the split-toning technique in photography, I decided to try it out on this photo.  I adjusted the highlights to one color and the shadows to another.  Suddenly, the colors started really popping.  There was the wow factor I was looking for and this photo was born.
