Photo of the Week 118

Photo of the Week 118
It's the final Friday before we hit Christmas season.  Because of this, we want to share one last fall related photograph with you as our featured "Photo of the Week."  This week, we have chosen to spotlight this photograph of some very red autumn leaves still clinging onto the tree which grew them.

Every year, there's a tree outside the window which turns a gorgeous shade of red.  It's a pleasant contrast to the yellow-only foliage which is most of the fall color we get around here.  I decided that I wanted to expand my fall leaf collection with a different color and this tree seemed like the perfect way to do just that.

Thanks to the wonderfully unpredictable weather which Idaho gives us in fall, I had to wait for a day which was cloudy and not windy or rainy.  That took some patience as most days lacked one or more of those weather conditions.  Finally a day came which met the conditions I needed so I grabbed my camera and headed over to the tree for some photos.

When I go there, I found that some of the branches were already bare of leaves for the year.  This meant that I had to use the lower and shaded branches for my photos.  The shade meant that the exposure was overdone with the sky and underdone with the rest of the image.  The leaves were too dark most of the time.

In an attempt to get a proper exposure, I played with my camera settings trying to get the leaves brighter while not completely blowing out the sky in the process.  I tried different angles which didn't include the sky as well.  This photo was one of those which did not feature the sky at all but it was still underexposed.  The light was tricky to work with that day.

When I got started processing, I managed to fix the lighting issues and get a proper exposure but something wasn't looking quite right with the photo.  It wasn't red enough for me.  That's when I turned up the saturation a bit and created this photograph.
