Photo of the Week 158

Photo of the Week 158 It's the final Friday in August.  It's almost time for school to start back up or maybe it already has for you.  Either way, the warm season is about over.  Let's take a couple of minutes and enjoy what remains of the summer heat while we have it.  Today's featured "Photo of the Week" will help do just that.  Today, we feature a ladybug.

I spent the summer the photo was taken by chasing flower photos.  Wild sunflowers were my subject of choice on more than one day.  This day was no different.  I went out in hopes of getting a portfolio building flower photograph.  What I came away with was something entirely different.

I went out to a patch of wild sunflowers which I had been working with the day before.  This time I noticed that they were crawling with bugs.  These weren't just any bugs either.  They were ladybugs.  Suddenly my chosen subject matter shifted in the direction of the insects.

These insects were happily crawling around the flowers minding their own business.  That was fine except when I wanted to get pictures of them.  They were moving too fast in the small plane of focus which my macro lens has to work with.  This meant that they crawled out of focus really quickly.  By the time I got them refocused, they were out again.  It was a trying mission of patience and timing.

I took lots of shots of the ladybugs.  Most weren't in focus at all or had important elements (such as the ladybugs) out of focus.  Then there was this shot.  I'm not sure how I managed to get this bug to stay in focus long enough to click the shutter, but it happened.  The result is this beautiful photograph of a ladybug on a wild sunflower.  I'm in so close with the insect that you can begin to see the reflective surface of its outer wings.
