Photo of the Week 166

Photo of the Week 166 The days are getting darker and colder but that doesn't mean that we can't still enjoy some beauty in the world.  In fact, this week's featured "Photo of the Week" is all about that.  It's simple but powerful.  Here's the story behind capturing this shot.

We were out on a hike with the camera gear.  I had been working on getting some good landscape shots that day.  Things weren't working out quite like I had hoped they would but I didn't walk away completely empty-handed either.

I had been thinking of some of my earlier successful photos.  I was thinking about a shot where I was downhill shooting up the side.  I captured grass against clouds in the sky.  It worked best in sepia tones.  I wondered if I could repeat something like that.

I was tailing my spouse when I spotted this grass.  It's very different from the initial shot described above but the inspiration was still there.  I dropped down to get below the level of the trail and shoot up towards the grass.

This simple shot has some very smooth bokeh for a hand-held shot.  Even better, it's nice and sharp to boot.  The next step was to get it right in post-processing.

I tried several approaches in color but they all weren't working as hoped.  I tried subtracting the color to see if black and white was the way to go.  It was but it still needed work.  The dark silhouettes of the grass needed to be inky black but I didn't want a huge contrast with the sky.  A deep vignette brought the focus in where I wanted it and darkened the overall feel of the photo to where I wanted it to be.

The result of all this work was this photograph you see here with a dark feel and grass in silhouette.
