Lately, the weather has been unpredictable.  There’s been lots of storms going through.  There’s been rain, hail, lightning, cloudy skies, and also sunny skies.  It can make for some amazing landscape photography with very dramatic skies.  It can also make for some very dangerous conditions to be outside in.  We found a window where it was safe to get out with the camera.

The dramatic skies and dramatic clouds of a storm are great for landscape photography.  I’ve been trying to get a shot at the skies for several days now.  It’s been a case of clashing schedules or hazardous weather.  It’s so frustrating sometimes.  However, there are a few chances which pop up for me every now and again.  This was one such occasion.

When the latest storm started letting up, I saw this beautiful sunset with dramatic clouds in front.  It was too good to pass up so I pulled out my camera and started hunting for the perfect foreground for these interesting and dramatic skies.

I felt that this particular setting required a simple foreground.  I found it in this farm field on the edge of city property.  The flat landscape let the sky be visible.  The planted and growing fields added color and interest.  The irrigation equipment also added a bit of flavor to the dramatic skyscape in front of me.

The trick with photography like this is how to process it.  Most often, the land will be underexposed or the sky will be overexposed.  It is really difficult to get both properly exposed in the same shot without help.  I exposed for the sky and brought back the light and color of the land in post-processing.

This photo makes a great addition to my springtime portfolio.  Still, it’s good to get out and stretch my muscles literally and also my photography muscles at the same time.
