  1. Do Command Strips Work on Textured Walls?
  2. Should I Use Command Strips to Hang My Art?

You’ve got some new art you want to hang on a textured wall but can’t poke a hole in the wall for some reason.  Sound familiar?  You’re probably thinking that you can use a command strip.  Is that a good idea?  Today, that’s what we’re talking about.  Let’s discuss command strips and textured walls.

Textured walls won’t hold these for long.  They’ll fall off quickly.

Today we ask the question if command strips will work on textured walls.  The short answer is no.  The official command strip website even says so.  The longer answer is they will but not very well.  How well they work does depend upon how textured a surface we’re talking about though.

The adhesive generally needs a fairly smooth surface to stick.  A very slight texture will generally work ok, but a more pebbly and pronounced texture won’t allow the command strip to stick well at all.  However, if you don’t hang much on it, it will probably last for a while.  Again, if you hang something heavy on a strip and hook, it will give up faster but will probably still hold just long enough to make you think it’s going to work.

If you were to try to attach a command strip to an unpainted brick wall, or similar, it probably won’t stick at all.  Some websites claim that a dab of hot glue will make it stick.  However, that defeats the purpose of clean and easy removal which command strips were created for.

In fact, if you try this glue method, you might end up damaging your wall and removing the paint like you see here.  Improper removal of the command strip itself can result in this kind of damage as well.  It’s an annoyance to deal with in a home you own.  This can be an expensive mistake to make in an apartment which you are renting.  If your contract forbids holes in the walls, paint removal like this will certainly ding your security deposit.

Command strips are great for what they’re designed for.  However, hanging things like heavy wall art on textured walls is not one of them.  There are other better options for hanging wall art.  Check out some options in this article here.

However, if you find yourself needing some Command strips to hang art in your home, then I recommend checking out these strips.  They are designed to hold heavier loads than some other options.  If you have a smooth wall and a contract forbidding punching holes in said wall, then these are the way to go.
